The way we work

Our programmes

Our contribution to addressing climate change focuses on:

  1. financing humanitarian responses in regions experiencing the impact of climate change and where capacities to protect vulnerable populations are low.
  2. funding NGOs, interest groups and think-tanks that are working to influence decision-making, whether broadly relating to climate policy or at a project-level, to halt activities that directly worsen the climate crisis.
  3. funding university-based research groups and academic institutions working on technologies, methods and theories that reduce carbon emissions, or accelerate climate adaptation or mitigation.

By invitation

All grants are by invitation-only, following a call to apply from the Foundation.

Grants

Each programme is funded on a 3-year cycle with funds granted as a multi-year pledge, following a selection process led by each Programme expert assisted by a special judging committee. To ensure flexible and rapid response to needs, awarded organisations can receive 1-3 fast tracked instalments of funding, following agreement as part of the selection process.

One programme per year

Calls for new applications by invitation are made once a year, but only for one of the three programmes according to the following schedule

Please visit Programme pages for more information.

The selection process

Charities, NGOs, think-tanks and research institutions eligible for applying are selected by the Board of Directors and invited to apply. As such the Foundation does not accept unsolicited applications.

Applications are pre-evaluated by a dedicated judging committee, made up of specialists in the relevant domain and appointed by the Board of Directors. New judging committees will be appointed for each call to reflect the expertise required for that specific call.

Governance

The Foundation is managed by a board of directors, comprised of Johan, Alja and Ole Askehave, and three domain experts: Rikke Johannessen, Esther Michelsen Kjeldahl and Poul Toft Frederiksen, each with responsibility for one of the Foundation’s three programmes.

Members of the Askehave family are permanent members, while the Programme experts are appointed for 4-6 year terms to allow for the completion of funding cycles.

How we evaluate applications

Applications are evaluated according to our evaluation policy. Criteria include alignment with the Foundation’s objectives, experience of similar projects in the region and evidence-based relevance of NGO’s core response with the goals of the specific programme.
